Drinking Water in the Village of Madoc
The Village of Madoc water system provides a supply of clean drinking water to 1,250 people in this Municipality of Centre Hastings community.
What is the water source?
Groundwater is the source of drinking water for the Village of Madoc. The two municipal wells for the Village of Madoc draw water from the surrounding ground but are also influenced by the quality of water flowing in nearby Deer and Madoc Creeks. This is because the fractured bedrock in the area has many cracks and crevices which allow surface water in the creeks to easily and quickly enter the groundwater. Both wells are therefore considered Groundwater Under the Direct Influence of surface water or ‘GUDI' Wells.

How is the drinking water source protected?
Ontario's Clean Water Act was created specifically to protect drinking water at the source rather than simply relying on water treatment alone to deliver safe, clean water. Because of scientific work completed under the Clean Water Act, Village of Madoc now has a mapped Wellhead Protection Area (WHPA) that is protected through policies in the Quinte Region Source Protection Plan.
