QUINTE CONSERVATION MAINTAINS FLOOD WARNING FOR LAKE ONTARIO AND THE BAY OF QUINTE – UPDATE #8
Lake Ontario’s outflows have been maintained at 10,400 cubic metres per second since June 13th, which is longer than in 2017 when outflows of this rate occurred from June 14th to August 7th. Outflows are expected to remain at 10,400 cubic metres per second until water levels on Lake Ontario reach 75.5 metres. The outflows will slowly decline as water levels drop below 75.5 metres due to increased velocities, which pose a risk to users on the upper St. Lawrence River. Outflows are expected to remain high well into the fall.
Lake Ontario water levels have been declining since mid-June. Water levels are expected to continue their seasonal decline into the fall. Water levels are expected to remain near seasonal highs over the next several weeks. The rate of decline will depend largely on rainfall.
Recently, lake evaporation has started to increase; this is expected to continue for several weeks.
Lake Erie’s water levels continue to slowly decline but still remain at a record high for this time of year. Record high inflows from Lake Erie continue.
The peak Lake Ontario water level of 75.92 metres was last recorded on June 15th. Lake Ontario’s water level is no longer at a record high; however, it still remains above 2017 levels for this time of year. Lake Ontario levels remain below the current record for this time of year which was set in 1947.
High wind and waves can cause shoreline erosion and wave uprush. Residents are advised to check local forecasts for warnings. Links for current Lake Ontario water levels can be found on Quinte Conservation’s website at QuinteConservation.ca. Shoreline property owners are reminded that all work along the shoreline will require a permit from Quinte Conservation.
Staff will continue to monitor conditions and will provide an update if forecasts and conditions change. For current water levels or to report any observations of flooding, residents are encouraged to visit QuinteConservation.ca.
A FLOOD WARNING statement indicates that flooding is imminent or already occurring in specific watercourses or municipalities. Municipalities and individuals should take action to deal with flood conditions. This may include road closures and evacuations.
This message will be in effect until (or updated if anything significant changes before) Friday, September 27, 2019.
