QUINTE CONSERVATION ISSUES FLOOD WATCH FOR LAKE ONTARIO, BAY OF QUINTE, AND URBAN AREAS; FLOOD OUTLOOK CONTINUES FOR RIVERS
The Quinte Conservation watersheds are forecast to receive 50 to 90 millimetres of rain today and into tomorrow. Water Resources Manager Christine McClure says, “The main concern for flooding is on the shorelines of the Bay of Quinte and Lake Ontario. The water level on Lake Ontario could rise up to 20 centimetres by early to mid-June. Rivers and inland lakes in our watersheds will reach typical spring highs. Widespread flooding on these river systems is not expected. Properties along the rivers that usually get wet in the spring may already be wet, or could expect water to encroach on their lawn. There may be some nuisance flooding of low lying lands.”
The Flood Outlook for the shorelines of the Bay of Quinte and Lake Ontario has been upgraded to a Flood Watch. The Flood Outlook Statement issued May 1 for rivers in the Quinte Conservation watersheds remains in place. These rivers include the Moira, Napanee, Salmon, Black, and Skootamatta.
The rising water levels combined with wind and waves on Lake Ontario and the Bay of Quinte could cause damage to property on the shoreline or erosion due to high water, wind, and waves. Boaters and anglers should be aware that increased floating debris will make boating conditions hazardous. Boaters and residents should also take care around boat launches and docks during this time of high water.
Quinte Conservation staff will be monitoring conditions closely.
