QUINTE CONSERVATION ISSUES FLOOD OUTLOOK STATEMENT FOR THE MOIRA RIVER WATERSHED
Quinte Conservation has issued a Flood Outlook Statement for the Moira River, Black River near Actinolite, and the Skootamatta River. Water Resources Manager Christine McClure says, “Forecasts show there is the potential for 45 millimetres of rain across the watershed on Monday and Tuesday. There is still snow north of Highway 7 and this will melt next week as temperatures increase.”
McClure adds, “Flows are still elevated from recent snow melt and have been sustained from earlier rain events. Residents can expect water levels similar to a typical spring runoff. This means properties that usually get wet in the spring will already be wet, or can expect water to encroach onto their lawns. Some buildings in very low lying areas may be affected. Conditions should be similar to those experienced during last year’s spring runoff.”
Rivers in the northern area of the Moira River watershed have peaked and could increase with more rain and snow melt. Those in the southern area should peak next week in response to rain and snow melt.
Quinte Conservation staff will be monitoring conditions closely.
Quinte Conservation reminds residents to be extremely cautious about changing conditions along rivers, creeks, and streams. Stream banks will be slippery and treacherous. Dams and other water control structures should be avoided at all times due to strong currents. Even water in ditches can be dangerous.
Residents should take care to monitor their sump pumps and ensure they are in good condition during this type of weather because of local ponding water.
A Flood Outlook Statement gives early notice of the potential for flooding based on weather forecasts calling for heavy rain, snow melt, high wind or other conditions that could lead to high runoff, cause ice jams, lakeshore flooding or erosion.
This message will be in effect until (or updated before) Friday, March 10, 2017.
