FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 8, 2017
FLOOD WARNING FOR BAY OF QUINTE AND LAKE ONTARIO SHORELINES IN THE QUINTE CONSERVATION WATERSHEDS IN EFFECT UNTIL THE END OF JUNE
Lake Ontario water levels remain above the highest recorded since 1918. Quinte Conservation Water Resources Manager Christine McClure says, “The Flood Warning for Bay of Quinte and Lake Ontario shorelines in the Quinte Conservation watersheds will remain in effect at least until the end of June. Based on the best available information from the federal government it appears that Lake Ontario water levels have stabilized. However, wind and waves can create short term higher water levels along shorelines.”
McClure adds, “Water levels will likely remain high for the rest of this month. We could see local water levels drop 30 centimetres between early July and mid-August.”
Quinte Conservation encourages residents experiencing flooding to report their conditions and seek shoreline protection advice using an online form. The form can be found at: https://www.cognitoforms.com/QuinteConservation1/_2017LakeOntarioAndBayOfQuinteHighWaterSurvey or on the main page of the Quinte Conservation website at www.QuinteConservation.ca
Shoreline residents are reminded that any work near the water may require a permit from Quinte Conservation and should call the office or visit the website for more information. Quinte Conservation staff can provide advice on shoreline protection.
All residents near flooded areas should take care during flooding conditions. Floodwater may be deeper than it appears and often contains hidden snags and debris. Parents and caregivers should keep children well away from floodwaters. They are not safe for wading.
Quinte Conservation staff will be monitoring conditions closely.
A Flood Warning means flooding is imminent or already occurring in specific watercourses or municipalities. Municipalities and individuals should take action to deal with flood conditions. This may include road closures and evacuations.
This message will be in effect until (or updated before) Wednesday, June 28, 2017.
