QUINTE CONSERVATION ISSUES A FLOOD WARNING FOR MOIRA RIVER AND NAPANEE RIVER WATERSHEDS

Yesterday’s rainfall of approximately 40 millimetres, along with significant snowmelt have caused a sharp rise in water levels on the upper Moira, Black, Skootamatta, Salmon, and Napanee Rivers. Lake levels in the northern regions of the watershed have also responded quickly to the rainfall.

Over the weekend, rivers and lakes in the upper portion of the watershed will continue to rise quickly and overtop their banks. The Moira River downstream of Stoco Lake to Foxboro will continue to rise and will reach bankfull early next week.

Residents in low lying areas should take the necessary precautions to protect their properties. Please ensure sump pumps are functioning and the outlet is clear from obstruction. Help reduce ponding by keeping ditches, culverts, and storm drains clear and secure items that might float away as flows increase.

Smaller creeks and streams have responded to the rainfall and are beginning to decline. No significant flooding is expected on the creeks in Prince Edward County.

The remainder of the snowpack will melt quickly next week because of forecasted double-digit temperatures and nighttime lows above zero. No significant precipitation is forecasted during this time.

All remaining ice surfaces should be considered unstable due to warming temperatures and higher flows. The public is advised to exercise extreme caution when near rivers and waterbodies and to stay away from open and fast flowing water, culverts, dams, ice covered water, and banks.

Staff will continue to monitor conditions. For current water levels or to report changes in water levels, residents are encouraged to visit QuinteConservation.ca.

A FLOOD WARNING: Notifies that flooding is imminent or already occurring in specific watercourses or municipalities. Municipalities and individuals should take action to deal with flood conditions. This may include road closures and evacuations.

This message will be in effect until (or updated before) April 13, 2023.
