BEAVER MEADOW CA TO BENEFIT FROM QUINTE CONSERVATION’S ADOPT AN ACRE FUNDRAISER
Quinte Conservation (QC) is thrilled to announce the launch of its annual Adopt An Acre campaign, encouraging the public to support Beaver Meadow Conservation Area in Prince Edward County.
“Beaver Meadow Conservation Area is a true hidden gem. The property has an interesting history, and from an ecological standpoint, it offers a fascinating view into how a naturalized area can provide such depth and variety to the species that live and grow there,” says Brad McNevin, Chief Administrative Officer for Quinte Conservation.
The proceeds generated from the Adopt An Acre 2024 campaign will be dedicated to the replacement of both wetland lookout platforms at Beaver Meadow. The estimated cost for this project is approximately $20,000.
Beaver Meadow was once an experimental farm in the early 1900s. The property was used to raise chickens, grow celery, mushrooms and sugar turnips, and produce and sell maple syrup, condensed milk and firewood. The area now boasts an impressive 330 plant species including wildflowers and deciduous trees and is home to songbirds and many wetland residents like Beavers, Blue Herons, and Osprey. Two short trails will take you around the wetland, each to a lookout platform.
Replacing the wetland lookout platforms will allow visitors an opportunity to learn about and experience the incredible wetland and its species at Beaver Meadow.
“Year after year, our community has stepped up to support Adopt An Acre and the donations received through this fundraiser have gone on to support these cherished green spaces, helping to preserve and protect them for future generations. It is our hope to raise enough funds during this campaign that we can put a focus on Beaver Meadow and finally replace the wetland lookout platforms,” McNevin says.
In the past, Adopt An Acre played a pivotal role in supporting upgrades and improvements to Quinte Conservation Area trails, and vital structures such as bridges, boardwalks, shelters, picnic tables, and benches. These enhancements have made the local green spaces more enjoyable for all, ensuring that they remain an asset to the community.
A beacon of community-driven conservation, Adopt An Acre enables nature enthusiasts and conservation advocates to symbolically adopt an acre of QC land for $30. In return, adopters will receive an official certificate and a tax receipt, making it a meaningful gift or a personal commitment to environmental stewardship.
For those who wish to go the extra mile, they can adopt two acres for $60. In return, these adopters will also receive an exclusive QC plush forest animal.
This heartwarming initiative runs from now until December 23 with the goal to adopt out 200 acres.
