PROTECT LOCAL WATERWAYS AT INVASIVE SPECIES EVENT

Belleville, Ont. – Uncover invasive species in the Bay of Quinte and learn how to protect local waterways at Quinte Conservation’s Bay of Quinte Invasive Species Information Session on Thursday, August 22.

Not only will attendees learn about the impacts of invasive species such as water soldier and grass carp on the Bay of Quinte, they will also hear from experts from the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) and Quinte Conservation. Attendees will also receive valuable resources on managing and preventing the spread of other aquatic invasive species.

“We are excited to host the Bay of Quinte Invasive Species Information Session. Events like this are crucial for raising awareness and providing valuable information about the impact of invasive species on our local ecosystems, like the Bay of Quinte. By bringing together experts and community members, we can work together to protect our natural resources and ensure a healthy environment for future generations,” says Mary Gunning, Aquatic Science Manager at Quinte Conservation.

Taking place at Quinte Conservation’s main office (2061 Old Highway 2, Belleville), doors open at 6:30 pm to tradeshow-style booths, with presentations starting at 7 pm on water soldier and 7:30 pm on grass carp.

Lauren Nawroth, OFAH Invasive Species Monitoring Technician, adds, “Water soldier is an invasive species that poses significant threats to our aquatic ecosystems by forming dense mats that crowd out native vegetation. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the impacts of Water Soldier and learn about the precautions necessary when handling this aggressive plant. Our goal is to equip the community with the knowledge needed to protect our waterways."

The Bay of Quinte Invasive Species Information Session event is made possible thanks to the support of Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR).
