2023 - Community Trees
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
April 25, 2023
MUNICIPALITIES TO GIVE AWAY SEEDLINGS THROUGH LOCAL COMMUNITY TREES EVENTS
Residents of nine local municipalities will have the opportunity to acquire a variety of native tree and shrub seedlings through designated giveaway locations during this year’s Community Trees initiative on Saturday, April 29th.
“There are so many benefits to planting native trees! They help to clean air and lock up carbon, slow and filter runoff, and aid in recharging groundwater while reducing flooding. They also help to shade and cool our urban areas while providing habitat for wildlife and improving our general health,” says Maya Navrot, Quinte Conservation’s Outreach and Stewardship Coordinator.
Native plants play an important role in this region’s natural ecology, and the Community Trees initiative provides residents with a great opportunity to support that role by planting on urban and rural properties and helping to increase forest cover across the Quinte region.
Navrot adds, “The Emerald Ash Borer has done a lot of damage to Ash trees across the region, it’s more important than ever to replace that tree loss and with a diversity of native species.”
As quantities of seedlings are limited, each municipality will determine the amount residents may take. Participants are asked to bring a bucket, plant pot, or bags to carry their seedlings home in and to be prepared to plant them soon afterward.
For questions or further event info, residents will need to contact their local municipality for more information. The Community Trees program is funded by the participating municipalities with guidance and support from Quinte Conservation.
