2025-04-17 QUINTE WATERSHED’S FLOOD OUTLOOK REDUCED TO WATER SAFETY STATEMENT FOR INLAND LAKES AND RIVERS
Weather Forecast: A widespread precipitation event is forecast for the Easter weekend. Southern parts of the watershed can anticipate 20mm of rain, with the northern areas receiving approximately 30mm of rain.
Watershed Conditions: The spring freshet is drawing to a close. Water levels on all lakes and rivers are receding from the high flows of last week. Anticipated rain over the Easter weekend may cause a temporary reversal but normal flows are expected to resume after a short duration of time. Any rise in water levels will be most noticeable in the smaller watercourses but is not expected to reach levels previously experienced this season.
Risks: Shoreline properties in the upper portions of the watershed may see a quick rise and fall in water levels. Nuisance flooding is possible in low-lying areas; however, water levels are not expected to impact most inhabited structures.
Actions: Residents in low-lying areas should take necessary precautions to protect their property. Ensure sump pumps are in good working condition and that there is access to a portable backup generator and pump. Reduce ponding by keeping ditches, culverts, and storm drains clear from obstructions.
Boaters should exercise caution when out on waterways. Be aware of increased debris and hazards in and on the water due to the spring season and damage caused by the recent ice storm.
A WATER SAFETY STATEMENT indicates that high flows, unsafe banks, melting ice or other factors could be dangerous for users such as anglers, boaters, swimmers, children, or pets. Flooding is not expected. gives early notice of the potential for flooding based on weather forecasts calling for heavy rain, snowmelt, high wind or other conditions that could lead to high runoff, cause ice jams, lakeshore flooding or erosion.
This message will be in effect until (or updated before) April 24, 2025.
